Strengthening Case Filing Against Former Government Officials in Bangladesh

We believe that the police currently lack both the capability and the interest needed to properly file cases against former government officials involved in serious crimes, including crimes against humanity. This shortfall hampers justice and accountability. To address this critical issue, it is essential to establish a dedicated process and appoint qualified personnel to ensure that cases are managed effectively. One viable solution could be to appoint assistant advisors under the Home Advisor or, alternatively to create a specialized body with legal expertise to oversee these cases.

This specialized body should not only oversee case management but also conduct public hearings on police conduct. By doing so, it can help identify and address underlying issues within the police department, fostering a more people-oriented and effective force. To ensure transparency and accountability, members of this body should be required to submit their asset declarations within two weeks of their appointment. This measure will help build public trust and reinforce the integrity of the process.
