The Path to Evolving as Bangladeshi Citizens: A Call for Greater Civic Engagement Among Bangladeshi Hindus
09/15/2024
Recently, Hindus in Bangladesh have become more visible in protests across various cities. While protest is their democratic right, the question arises: are they advocating for Hindu rights or for broader citizen rights? Rather than focusing solely on religious identity, Hindus should champion the rights of all citizens and actively participate in nationwide civic movements. Greater engagement with society at large is crucial to overcoming feelings of separation.
Currently, Hindus make up around 8-9% of the Bangladeshi population. However, their participation in major civic movements, such as the recent protests aimed at removing Sheikh Hasina, has been relatively low. With around 800 deaths reported in these protests, it is important to ask: what percentage of the Hindu community is actively involved? This low engagement indicates a disconnect that must be addressed.
There is also a perception that India leverages some Bangladeshi Hindus to influence Bangladesh’s government and politics. If this is true, it is imperative for the Hindu community to break away from such influences and take full ownership of their Bangladeshi identity. They should openly criticize any harmful actions taken by India against Bangladesh and advocate for the welfare of the country as a whole.
Greater civic engagement and participation in national movements will allow Bangladeshi Hindus to evolve, not just as a minority group, but as fully integrated citizens contributing to the nation’s progress.
